Anabolic Steroids… Breaking News!

NY joins 2 other states in steroid ban on horses

NEW YORK (AP) — New York has toughened its steroids policy for racehorses, following the lead of the two other states that hold Triple Crown races.

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board said Tuesday the new rules take effect Jan. 1 at all thoroughbred and standardbred tracks in the state. That includes Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown. The new rules set limits for steroids that are permitted.

Prompted by the death of the filly Eight Belles after the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky and Maryland instituted steroid restrictions. Trainer Rick Dutrow acknowledged using an anabolic steroid on Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown.

Steroids would have made a gold taste bittersweet - Chambers

Dwain Chambers yesterday admitted that he would have had to wrestle with his conscience had he become an Olympic champion while using drugs.

“It would have been bittersweet,” said Chambers. “There would have been a huge part of me that said, ‘Yes, I have achieved my goal’, but at the same time I knew I would have been cheating myself and others, over what they have put in, their passion and hard work and it would have been a temporary fix.

“I would have gone home, having to deal with all the questions and having to lie; continuing to lie in your life is ultimately going to end in failure. I have lied a lot in the past and there are still a lot of people who don’t believe me.”

The 30-year-old Chambers missed out on competing at the Beijing Olympics in August after his attempts to overturn his lifetime ban by the British Olympic Association failed following his positive test in 2003 for the banned anabolic steroid Tetrahydrogestrinone, which cost him a two-year suspension from the sport. But he aims to make up for lost time next year when he is likely to be one of the favourites to win the 60m title at the European Indoor Championships in Turin in March.

However, the ultimate test will arrive in the summer at the world championships in Berlin when he will confront Jamaica’s triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt.

Chambers trained with Bolt when he first returned to the sport two years ago at the end of his drugs suspension. It was why he was not surprised by Bolt’s performances in Beijing, where he broke the world record in the 100m and 200m.

“I had the privilege of training with him [Bolt] in 2006 and I always knew he was going to run as fast as he did,” said Chambers. “It was thrilling to watch and he has raised the bar to a new level. I am thoroughly looking forward to competing against him next year.”

Chambers said he will watch with interest as the Beijing organisers now retest 5,000 drug samples for traces of the previously undetectable EPO Cera. He said: “It’s going to be interesting and also disappointing because of all those performances we thought were clean but are now going to be exposed. It shows the testing procedure getting more stringent and it puts out a strong message that we are closely behind you and it is something I am supporting. I am curious to see the outcome of [it] and hopefully we can start working towards a clean sport for 2012.”

Chambers revealed an ambition to coach when he retires from athletics and remains hopeful that he and the sport can move on. The Dutchman Charles van Commenee, the new head coach of UK Athletics, has said he will welcome Chambers back. The sprinter said: “I am looking forward to the next three or four years as a positive turnaround with the support of UKA. I am still going through a phase of trying to forgive myself for my actions. I am looking forward to getting back to the track and not always be questioned about my past.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Chambers talked of how he had a good idea of fellow competitors who were also cheating. He said: “There was a silent acknowledgement. You never spoke about it but you had your strong suspicions and you knew who was doing what, who had gone from being a broke individual to a megastar in a few seasons. But you never pointed fingers because you can do it with hard work.”

Zersenay Tadese and Lornah Kiplagat, meanwhile, brilliantly defended their IAAF World Half-Marathon Championship titles with runaway victories in Rio de Janeiro. The Eritrean and Dutch runners each collected winner’s prizes of $30,000 (£17,598).

Putnam Detective Resigns Amid Steroid Probe

PALATKA, FL — A probe into illegal steroids among Putnam County Sheriff’s Officers has led to criminal charges and the resignation of a detective after 20 years on the force.

41-year-old Detective William Prioletti resigned after an internal investigation was launched on a complaint that Prioletti was using steroids and other non-prescribed medications. The complaint stated that Prioletti had bought the prescription thyroid medication Cynomel (the Mexican equivalent of Cytomel) via the internet and had sold the drug to two other Sheriff’s Officers, Lt. Teresa Odom, 54, and Detective Elton Miller, 37.

A criminal and internal investigation was launched into the complaint, but due to what a Putnam County Sheriff’s Office press release called “idiosyncrasies in the investigations,” only Prioletti is facing a criminal charge.

Lt. Odom has been demoted to the rank of Sergeant, with a loss in pay, probation, and a letter of reprimand.

Detective Miller has been suspended, without pay, for three days, probation, and will also receive a letter of reprimand.

Cytomel is a thyroid hormone that produces effects in the body similar to steroids. It is sometimes abused by bodybuilders.

Study Finds Overweight Asthmatic People Respond Less To Steroid Treatment

New York, NY (AHN) - People with asthma who are overweight or obese do not respond well to the inhaled steroids that are often used to treat the disease, new studies have found.

Asthma treatments are 40 percent less effective in obese asthmatic patients because obesity limits the pathways by which steroids reduce inflammation in the body, researchers from the National Jewish Health in Denver said.

The researchers analyzed health records of 33 adults with asthma and 12 without and measured the response of blood cells and airway cells to various steroids used to treat asthma. The steroid works by interfering with inflammatory signaling pathways by raising the level of a molecule called MAP kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1).

In the patients with healthy weight, the levels of MKP-1 increased by 5.27 times as compared to 3.11 times or 41 percent less in those who were overweight or obese, the study found.

Researchers say they are not sure as to why the treatments don’t work well in obese patients but speculate that obesity leads to diabetes and cardiovascular disease that can also hamper the steroid effects.

The study was published in the first October issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Mandarich admits steroid use in TV interview

New York — Former NFL draft bust Tony Mandarich, a native of Oakville, Ont., says he used steroids at Michigan State University and faked a drug test before the 1988 Rose Bowl.

He also said during an interview on Inside the NFL that will air today on Showtime that he did not use steroids in the NFL but was addicted to alcohol and painkillers.

Mandarich said he provided a fake urine sample to evade detection before the 1988 Rose Bowl, but said he couldn’t confirm a report that other players did the same.

The offensive lineman was the No. 2 overall pick in 1989 by the Green Bay Packers. He lasted just three years with Green Bay amid rumours of steroid use.
